Setup tutorial

Optical vs. USB audio

While the PlayStation 4 uses an optical audio port, the PlayStation 5 uses USB audio.

This change might cause worry for Arctis Pro Wireless or Arctis Pro + GameDAC users who usually connect via PS4 optical.

Luckily, these and all SteelSeries PlayStation headsets (listed above) remain compatible with the PlayStation 5 via USB.

ChatMix (game vs. chat audio) solutions

The removal of the optical audio part does leave the question of game and chat audio balancing on ChatMix-enabled headsets, which allows you to balance your game and chat audio on the headset. There are 2 solutions moving forward:

  • PlayStation 5 will likely introduce game and chat audio balancing options in its user interface (stay tuned!)
  • Users can use alternate methods of getting optical audio from their TV or using an HDMI audio extractor, providing the ability to use ChatMix

Surround sound and 3D audio

PlayStation 4 used optical connectivity to provide digital 5,1 surround sound. As an upgrade, the PlayStation 5 provides superior digital 3D audio via USB. This functionality will be available on all compatible USB and 3.5mm connected headsets, including the headsets listed above, so you can rest easy!

Will my existing PS4 headset connect to PS5?

Even if you currently connect to your PS4 via optical, you can simply connect a single USB cable to enjoy both game and chat audio on PS5. Your Arctis headset, whether connected via USB or 3.5mm, will be able to take advantage of PlayStation's new 3D audio capabilities!

Will I need to update my headset for PS5?

All Arctis headsets listed above will work out-of-box with the PlayStation 5, no updates required. Depending on the headset, you'll connect wired or wireless via 3.5mm or USB.

Specifically on the Arctis Pro + GameDAC and Arctis Pro Wireless, users can choose to update their headsets to add optimized PS5 inputs to their OLED screens, but this update is optional.

What if I already own an Arctis?

An easy rule of thumb is that if your current Arctis already works with PlayStation 4, then it will be immediately compatible with PlayStation 5.

If you're not sure, refer to the guide above, or the specs of your specific Arctis headset.

Why does my headset sound different on PS5 than PS4?

The PS5 has its built-in 3D Audio enabled by default. This provides simulated surround sound for headphones/headsets, but it also colors the sound of the audio. To disable 3D Audio, go to:
Settings -> Sound -> Audio Output -> Enable 3D Audio

USB volume lower on PS5 than PS4?

When you first connect a headset to the PS5, the volume is set to about 80%. To increase, go to:
Settings -> Sound -> Volume -> Headphones

How can I adjust ChatMix for my Arctis on PS5?

The PS5 has a built-in adjustment for balancing game and chat audio, which you can access from your controller: - Press the PS button to bring up the quick menu - Sound -> Voice chat balance -

The PS5 doesn't have an optical audio output. How do I connect my Arctis Pro Wireless or GameDAC?

You can simply connect USB from the Arctis Pro Wireless or GameDAC to the PS5. Set the input of the headset to PS4 via the OLED screen menu (a PS5 input mode will be available for your Arctis in a future firmware update).

Can I use my Arctis Pro Wireless or GameDAC on PS5 without updating firmware?

Ja! The upcoming firmware update adds a PS5 input mode for convenience, but is not required. Both headsets have full compatibility with the PS5 simply by using the PS4 input mode selected on your OLED screen.

Which Arctis headsets work with the PS5 3D Audio?

Any headset that connects to the controller via 3.5mm or to the console via USB can take advantage of the PS5's built-in 3D audio. Check our PlayStation headsets page for our top picks.
